Le Pont Vieux at Sunset

Le Pont Vieux, The Old Bridge - Looking back to La Bastide

The bridge is 210 metres long, and dates back to the Middle Ages (1359). For a long time it was the only link between the two towns of Carcassonne, La Bastide and La Cité. There once was an arch in the middle of the bridge symbolising the union, and the often bloody rivalry between the two towns.

The Old Bridge is certainly one of the most romantic places in Carcassonne and from there, you can enjoy an incredible view of the medieval fortress of La Cité. At night time the view is particularly spectacular and impressive. You will feel as though you are living in a fairy tale.

From the Pont Vieux you can also admire the Black Mountains to the north with their huge windmills at Sallèles-Limousis, the highest in France. To the south, on a clear day you can see the smooth reliefs of the Corbière Mountains and the sharp and jagged summits of the Pyrenees.
