La Manufacture Royale de la Trivalle.

At the start of the fourteenth century, Carcassonne, France was incredibly wealthy and one of the most important textile centres in all of Europe.

The French crown regulated these fine textiles with a trademark brand of 3 fleur-de-lis allowing only the very best products to be exported to Italy and to as far away as Constantinople.

The modern-day neighbourhood of La Trivalle, underneath the walls of La Cité was the beating heart of this industry. At one time, there would have been hundreds of individual workshops with artisans creating these fine cloths. Eventually all these individual artisans were brought together under one roof of La Manufacture Royale de la Trivalle or The Royal Cloth Factory of Trivalle. It comprised some 4000 sq metres, approximately one acre, of immense buildings housing numerous workshops. All that remains today in the former family home whose facade has recently been restored.
